Project 08: Music for the Pan
Writing Pieces onto the Body of the Steelpan
Very little musical literature has been written specifically for the steelpan; steelbands usually play arrangements of existing pieces from calypso, latin, pop or, much more rarely, jazz or classical music. With its project "music for the pan" ferrum turns the tables: Claudio Pini and Yaira Yonne have made the characteristics of the steelpan the focus of their attention and have written a cluster of pieces at the intersection latin/jazz/classics onto the iron body of the steelpan. "music for the pan" is an innovative piece of steelpan literature made in Switzerland – no more, no less.
