Project 04: Atlantic Oscillation
In 2004 ferrum performed orchestral works by tango master Astor Piazzolla and modern classical composer Jacques Ibert. Piazzolla intertwines tango with classical music, in Ibert's compositions classical music meets jazz: the program follows the complex network of musical influences which has been woven over the Atlantic in the past four centuries.
Excerpts from the program:
Astor Piazzolla: Formalized Passion
Danza criolla
Coral
Tres minutos con la realidad
Conductor: Yaira Yonne
Astor Piazzollas music is a daring mixture of the seductive power of the Argentine tango and the sincere formality of the music of Bach, Stravinsky and Bartok. Of the three orchestral pieces "Tres minutos" is the closest to tango, a three-minute ondensate of life. "Coral" is a rough hommage to Bach. The driven "Danza", finally, reminds of the influences of Creole rhythms on the tango and connects these with the changes in rhythms typical for modern classical music.
Jacques Ibert : Dizzying Modern Classical Music
Bacchanale
Conductor: Yaira Yonne
Jacques Ibert (1890-1962) knew about the popular charfacter of his music and stood up for it. Beyond the vanguard tendencies of his time he virtuosically combined modern jazz and acne elements with rather traditional classical forms. "Bacchanale" is dizzying lust for life in undamped speed.
