Our motivation is to present the steelpan as a sophisticated, multifaceted instrument and to build a body of unique and intoxicating literature specifically written or arranged for the steelpan.
Accordingly, since its foundation in 2000 ferrum has been experimenting with styles that are unusual for the steelpan – our music explores all shades between fast latin and subtle jazz and also ventures into the intersection between jazz and classical music. Our arrangements and compositions are mainly written by our musical director, Claudio Pini, an internationally acclaimed jazz musician, professional pannist, arranger and composer. For our classical experiments we cooperate with Yaira Yonne, a classical conductor and composer specialized in jazz/classical crossover, and steelpan expert.
Ferrum regularly engages with specific themes: in its 2004 project "Atlantic Oscillation" , for instance, ferrum showed, among other things, conducted orchestral pieces by Astor Piazzolla, and in the context of the 2008 project "music for the pan" Claudio Pini and Yaira Yonne have written pieces onto the iron body of the steelpan.
ferrum performs in Switzerland and internationally, in acclaimed cultural venues as well as in various festivals such as e.g. at the Montreux Jazz Festival.
ferrum pannists are young lay musicians, all long-term pannists, while the musical directors, the drummer, the conductor and seomtimes the solo pans are professional musicians. > Who is who @ ferrum?
